About DePaul University

DePaul University is a private research university located in Chicago, which is the largest city in the US state of Illinois, as well as the 3rd largest city in USA, having more than 2.8 million people living within its limits. The Chicago metropolitan area, commonly referred to as `Chicagoland`, is the 26th largest metropolitan area, worldwide, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 10 million inhabitants, spread across the states of Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Originally named St. Vincent’s College, DePaul University was founded in 1898, by the Congregation of the Mission priests and brethren, known as the Vincentians, and draws its name from the 17th century French priest, who was also a philanthropist - Saint Vincent de Paul. There are more than 25 000 students attending classes at DePaul, of which 16 200 are undergraduates and 8 870 are graduates, fact which makes it largest Roman Catholic university and one of the 10 private universities in USA, as well as the largest private university in the state.

With the primarily focus on pedagogy, the university has been constantly recognized for excellence in experiential and service – based learning, its service learning program, according to the US News & World Report, being among the top of the `America’s Best Colleges` rankings, since 2004. Te Princeton Review named DePaul 1st in the nation, in the `Diverse Student Population` category, among the best colleges and universities in USA.

The athletic teams from DePaul are known as the DePaul Blue Demons, who compete in the NCAA Division I, the university being a member of the Big East Conference, in various sports, being best known for their achievements in basketball, in which the university gained attention, during the 1978 – 1979 season, when the basketball team, under the leadership of Ray Meyer, reached the NCAA Division I basketball Final Four.

DePaul has produced a series of notable alumni, among the most resonant names being: Michael A. Bilandic - past Mayor of Chicago, Joseph Burke - judge of the Illinois Appellate Court, Jack Greenberg - former CEO, McDonald’s Corporation, Ray Manzarek - keyboardist for 1960’s rock band The Doors, George Mikan - one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players, George Perle - Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, as well as many other people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
